The Eureka Skydeck turned 9 in May, boy has time flown!
To celebrate, we thought we’d go back a little bit and tell you a few things you might not know about us.
What’s in a name?
Well, the name was inspired by the Eureka stockade, a rebellion during the Victorian gold rush in 1854. But some go as far as saying the gold windows actually represent the gold rush and a red stripe represent the blood spilt. Some also believe the blue glass that covers most of the building and the white horizontal lines represent the stockade’s flag.
Big tower? Bigger climb to the top
There are about 3680 stairs and 92 floors until you get to the top of the tower. Yep, that’s certainly enough to get those glutes pumping.
A lot of man hours
It took 4 years and 2 months to build the Eureka Tower with 450 people working here every day, that’s a whole lot of coffee breaks. The Edge took six months in total to construct.
A hell of a lot of concrete and glass
The amount of concrete used in construction could fill 44 Olympic swimming pools (110,000 tonnes) and the area or glass on the outside of the building could fill the area of the MCG twice (40,000 square meters of glass)
FACT: The tower is actually is designed so that if lightning does strike, it’s conducted straight to the ground. Lightning travels down the conductor cable as fast as you can blink and no one in the building would feel a thing.
Come in and experience the Eureka Skydeck for yourself!
